Keeping things in perspective for your job hunt - If you are not convinced by now that job seeking during the holidays is a good idea, I dont know what to say! Suffice to repeat there are opportunities out there. You just need to be willing and ready to meet them. Have you seen the Wall Street Journals series of blogs by job seekers? Weeks ago, when I began my Holiday Job Search series, I saw a post that I knew I wanted to share. One of the WSJs contributors, Kevin Mergens, wrote a post with a message I thought was the perfect cap to the information Ive been sharing. Kevin wrote: So, as the holidays approach I feel it is critical to keep things in perspective. Being an M.B.A. on unemployment stinks for both the ego and the bank account, but I am hardly deserving of any sympathy. When I was in this boat during Christmas six years ago, I remember feeling down about not having a job and then reading a local letter to Santa. The young girl that penned the letter did not ask for a doll or a video game or an iPod. She asked Santa for a coat and boots so she could deal with the Chicago winter. After seeing that, I knew my problems were not really that big. I decided that we could certainly afford to contribute a few bucks to the local charity that played Santa for these kids. The funny thing is, less than twenty minutes after I called in my small donation, I got a call with a job offer. I know that some readers really are in very difficult situations after being out of work for a long time. However, no matter what, it is important to keep things in perspective. Helping someone else at this time of year is yet another way to help yourself. While most people will not land an opportunity upon offering a charitable donation, it certainly doesnt hurt to think of those less fortunate. Thank you for reading. There are some simple tips and tricks that can help you look for things that are not usually written on the resume. This will make the entire process of putting together a resume more enjoyable. So you will be able to improve your chances of getting a job.First, you should always check to see that there are no missing fields on your resume. If there are, you should contact the employment agency that is handling your application and explain your problem. It is important to let them know about the field you are planning to change. This way they will know how to treat you. They should also be aware of what will happen to their files.Next, you should write about the things that you have left on the resume. Start by listing all the skills you have. Then, list the field that you want to change. The last step is to talk about the experienc e and skills that you have. Be sure to mention the different career areas you have worked in. Young v. United Parcel Service What the Pregnancy Discrimination Case is Really About Any woman in the vicinity of her child-bearing years will want to pay attention to a case that’s being heard by the Supreme Court today. The high court’s findings on Young v. United Parcel Service should address the gray areas of what workplace protections are guaranteed for pregnant women. The least you need to know: What’s the case about, anyway? The plaintiff in the case is Peggy Young of Lorton, Va., who had worked as a delivery truck driver for UPS. As part of her job description, she needed to be able to lift packages weighing up to 70 pounds. But when she got pregnant, her midwife wrote her a note that said she should not lift more than 20 pounds. Young asked for a temporary “light-duty” assignment, but the company’s occupational health manager determined that she was ineligible. Young says the division manager then told her she was “too much of a liability,” and she was not allowed to return to work until after she had given birth. So Young had to take an extended unpaid leave of absence, which caused her to lose her health coverage. Wasn’t that discrimination? That’s the question the court has to answer. In 1978, Congress passed the Pregnancy Discrimination Act which clarifies that discrimination against pregnant women is a form of sex discrimination. That means your employer can’t fire you or deny you job benefits because you’re pregnant, you might become pregnant, you’ve given birth, or you have any related medical problems. Your employer has to treat you the same as people who are not pregnant but similar in their ability to work. To prove sex discrimination, however, Young needed to show four things. First, that she was a woman. Second, that she was qualified for the job, or the job benefit. Third, her employer denied her the job or benefit she wanted. And fourth, a similarly situated man received the job or benefit that she wanted. The fourth presents a particular challenge: Since men can’t get pregnant, which men are in a similar situation? Young says UPS did give some other workersâ€"employees who were injured on the job or had their drivers’ licenses were temporarily revokedâ€"the light duty she wanted. Therefore, Young says UPS owed her the same accommodations. However, lower courts disagreed with Young. The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals reasoned that UPS’s policy was “pregnancy-blind.” UPS wouldn’t have offered light duty assignments to, say, a man who threw his back out by lifting his kid or a woman who injured herself during a volunteer firefighter shift. Since UPS didn’t give all its temporarily-disabled workers light duty, the court found that UPS didn’t have to give light duty to Young. Many women’s groups, health providers, labor advocates and even pro-life activists strongly disagreed with that ruling. “If at some point during her pregnancy, a pregnant worker needs a minor adjustment to her job duties in order to continue doing her job safely, the employer has an obligation to provide that,” says Liz Watson, director of Workplace Justice for Women at the National Women’s Law Center. What happens next? Young appealed. The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the case Wednesday and issue a ruling sometime before the end of this term, in late June. But in a “friend of the court” brief, the Justice Department argues that it might be a moot point. In 2008, Congress passed a law amending the Americans with Disabilities Act that should make it even easier for pregnant women to qualify for accommodations like the one Young sought. Now, injuries that temporarily limit your ability to lift, stand, or bend should also qualify you for accommodations under the ADA. And UPS has already reversed its policy. “While UPS’s denial of [Young’s] accommodation request was lawful at the time it was made (and thus cannot give rise to a claim for damages), pregnant UPS employees will prospectively be eligible for light-duty assignments,” the company’s brief says. In the meantime, what are my rights if I’m pregnant or plan to become pregnant? You are afforded the same protections as Young through the Pregnancy Discrimination Act. So you can’t be fired or denied benefits. Also, depending upon the size of the company, you may be entitled by law to up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act. Additionally, under Obamacare, employers are required to allow mothers reasonable break time and a private space to express breast milk, Watson says. I think an employer violated my rights. What can I do? You can contact the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to file a complaint, Watson says. You’ll have more company than you might expect: From 1997 to 2011, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission received over 74,000 complaints of pregnancy discrimination. You can also contact your state’s fair employment practice agency. Some states and municipalities have even stronger protections for pregnant women in the workplace. In the past 18 months, Illinois, Delaware, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, West Virginia, Philadelphia, New York City, Providence and Pittsburg have all passed new laws, Watson says. Or call a lawyer. “We unfortunately speak to women a lot who have suffered pregnancy discrimination,” Watson says. “What happened to Peggy Young, being forced off the job because she brought in a doctor’s note, is happening to women all across the country.”

Snakes are versatile enough to overcome almost any obstacle in our world, so why would another's be so hard? One of SINTEF's researchers even thinks robot snakes could have practical use in rescue missions on earth by noticing people in crumbling buildings. The following is one of the most ridiculous sentences I have ever written: We should all be more like robot snakes. What?! It's better than being a cockroach, and it can teach us an important career (and life) lesson. When it comes to navigating the job market these days, there are a multitude of hurdles. There's getting your resume and cover letter actually seen, making contact with someone at your target company, getting and acing a job interview, negotiating for any potential offers you receive, and so many other challenges. If we were all career robot snakes - or even just the naturally-occurring kind - we could ensure that no matter how the economy or employment process shifts, we'll be able to handle it. Tailor your resume (and obviously your cover letter) to each position you apply for. Have someone in your network refer you for a job, especially if they're a weaker tie. Read job advice articles even when you have a stable job you're happy with. There are many options to enhance your career slitheriness. (Maybe one of those is creating a new word for the sole purpose of bringing your point home in one article.) No matter what tactics you use, make sure your strategy is to always improve as a professional, so no jungle, crater or resume-scanning software slows you down. 5 Things You Should Never Do During an Exit Interview - Fairygodboss Ive practiced human resources for over10 years, and this is the inside skinny into exit bewerberinterviews. Most companies manage exit interviews poorly because bedrngnishing happens after the exit interview.Exit interviews are now say your last peace conversations instead of a framework to produce meaningful insights for the company to make positive changes to the culture, organization, or employment practices. In theory the exit interview is to offer a structured framework for a departing employee to ask logistical questions, offer feedback, and provide suggestions.Notice how I write structured framework instead of a script. The framework should be flexible, allowing a two-way conversation between human resources and the soon-to-be former employee. Even if the company doesnt have the best exit interview process, there are effective ways that you can offer feedback that will force a next step. Here are some suggest ions on what you should never do or say and how to make the best out of your final conversation with your employer.1. Avoid venting.A complaining session is bedrngnis going to be in a productive format for either party. The person conducting your interview may not know how to derive outcomes from the conversation and, therefore,could create a misinterpretation of your intent. Generally, this person is looking to codify you in one of the following ways found a better opportunity or compensation, not happy with manager or management, personal decision or life change, or unspecified. Instead, go to your exit interview with a short list of three to fivetopics where you state your feedback and some possible solutions. For exampleMy manager is out of touch with the team dynamics and we have raised issues in our team meetings. S/he seem to doesnt care. Its frustrating. I think it would be helpful for skip-level feedback for this manager and the opportunity for the team to have a facilitate d check-in every quarter.We recently learned that the new hire in the group has a higher compensation than the rest of the team. I did some research online and found that I can get a better paying job somewhere else. When I raised my concern with HR, they told me youll have to wait until your next salary review. I think it would be valuable to focus on retaining talent and addressing this issue now. Youre going to pay the money either way (pay me the correct salary now or hire someone at the same rate).2. Dont stop at HR.Most likely youll have an exit interview with your human resources person but you should also have an exit interview with your colleagues on an individual basis even if this means you schedule the time yourself. Since the HR person will likely not have all of the context of your role, I suggest your manager, someone you worked with frequently outside of your team, and a peer. Exchanging information as a knowledge transfer and to offer insights can be extremely valu able to both parties as to how to move forward. Providing this information can be productive in finding a replacement to your role in terms of qualities to find (or avoid), skills, relationships the role will need, or other useful get-it-down styles.3. Dont thinkthat youre the end-all-be-all.The fact is most of us are replaceable. Nobody in the history of ever is someone completely irreplaceable in the workplace. Remove your ego from the exit interview and be humble to the fact that there might be someone who can do the job more effectively than you and that youre choosing to leave on your own terms. Instead, focus on the role you occupied. What was difficult? What did you find easy? Where did you seek opportunities for growth? Insight into your experience in these domains can be an extremely valuable discussion for the person facilitating the exit interview.4. Dont say, Id never work here again.You never know what might happen or change in the future. What is true right now may not be true tomorrow. Or, perhaps the person youre speaking with remembers your comment and you lose an amazing opportunity to work with someone you admire (either at this company or a totally different one in 10 years). Focus on what was challenging or what lead to you resigning from your role. The story leading up to these moments contribute to how others might be feeling. (In which case the company may have a change in management and need you to come back to give it another go) Never say never.5. Dont direct your resent and frustration onto the person giving your exit interview.(Especially of they are a human resources professional.) I know, I know its easy to rag on the incompetent HR person who doesnt seem to have a clue about what is really going on in the company. The fact is, most HR teams are in fire fighting mode and therefore overworked in the day to day operations. Its unreasonable for them to be everywhere at the same time and to fully understand top to bottom what is goin g on in the company. Sometimes they have the perspektive to get context through conversations and investigations, but its never the full picture. Consider suggesting to the HR professional which areas need the most support and questions they can ask to get to the heart of the issues. Your HR representative will be appreciative.The goal to the exit interview is to say your final words on record so that the company can use your insights to make positive improvements to the overall employee experience. While it may seem that nothing is possible any feedback can demonstrate a tension or trend that will lead to a next step. Offer your feedback as a gift to the future state of the company theres no sense on not speaking up just to prove a point that you are resentful.Most employees go through the exit interview process at some point in their lives. And, yes, it should be a face-to-face interview and not just the completion of an exit interview form, so it can be uncomfortable.
